Libraryhack was an initiative of the National and State Libraries of Australia (NSLA) in 2011. The State Library of Queensland was the Project Leader and opened its vaults to invite people to use their resources in creative new ways. Old photographs, music scores, data sets and maps were offered copyright free.

The Edge, State Library Queensland’s Digital Culture Centre ran a series of workshops and activities around South East and Central Queensland and I was contracted to Produce the events and activities.

Highlights included:

“Hip Hop Hack” held inside an old Caravan at the Shockwave Festival, Blackall – regional Queensland. Young people learnt how to remix old poetry and musical scores and turn them into hip hop tracks.

“The Lock-In” a 24 hr ‘hack-a-thon’ which lead to the production of high quality apps, data visualisations, interactive digital displays and creative programming.

“Photo-Mashups” participants learnt how to use photoshop to give old photographs new meanings. (Artwork by Warren Handley)

“Libraryhack Exhibition” showcased all of the outcomes from this program and awarded 3 winners in various categories for their hard work and innovation.
